Amazon and Global Optimism Welcome Henkel and Signify to The Climate Pledge

Amazon and Global Optimism Welcome Henkel and Signify to The Climate Pledge

Henkel is taking real, science-based, high-impact actions, including deploying renewable energy, investing in sustainable buildings, and mobilizing supply chains to tackle climate change

Signify, which already achieved carbon neutrality earlier this year, is joining The Climate Pledge to collaborate with other signatories and share best practices

The Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism, calls on signatories to take urgent action to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Today, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Global Optimism announced that Henkel has joined The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050. Signify, which already achieved carbon neutrality earlier this year, is also joining The Climate Pledge to collaborate with other signatories and share best practices.

Signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis;
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies;
  • Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

“By signing The Climate Pledge, companies around the world are taking collective action to protect our planet from the catastrophic impacts of climate change,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “We welcome Henkel as they join us in our commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement. We are also excited for Signify, which achieved carbon neutrality earlier this year, to join The Climate Pledge with the goal of collaborating with other signatories and sharing best practices. These companies are demonstrating important leadership as they help us accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and protect the planet for future generations.”

Henkel’s commitment to leadership in sustainability has been embedded in its corporate culture for decades. The company has been working closely with Amazon to promote sustainable innovation—for example, to enhance customer experience through new and sustainable packaging. Henkel’s long-term goal is to become climate-positive by 2040. In the near term, the company plans to reduce the carbon footprint of its production by 65% by 2025 and 75% by 2030. By 2030, 100% of the electricity Henkel uses to power its operations will come from renewable sources. And by 2040, Henkel aims to have converted all remaining fossil fuels used in production to climate-neutral alternatives and supply surplus carbon-neutral energy to third parties. In addition, Henkel wants to leverage its brands and technologies to help customers, consumers, and suppliers save 100 million tons of CO2 in a ten-year period from 2016 to 2025.

“Climate change is a global challenge, which requires our collective action. At Henkel, we want to make a positive contribution to protecting the climate. Based on our achievements to date and in line with our ambitions for the coming years, we are pleased to join and support The Climate Pledge,” said Henkel CEO Carsten Knobel. “Together with Amazon, Global Optimism, and the other signatories, we are committed to drive tangible progress and jointly take action to limit global warming.”

Signify, the world leader in lighting, is another new member of The Climate Pledge. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21), in Paris, in December 2015, Signify committed to achieve carbon neutral operations in 2020. Last September, it announced that it had reached this milestone and plans to double its positive impact on the environment and society by 2025. Signify will join The Climate Pledge to share its experience, and to help and encourage other signatories to advance their own carbon reduction programs.

“We are pleased to join The Climate Pledge community as it mobilizes companies to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement 10 years early,” said Harry Verhaar, Signify Head of Global Public and Government Affairs. “We are committed to sharing best practices with other companies from our own journey to carbon neutrality in 2020, and to ramp up our positive impact on the environment and society.”

“The Paris Agreement set out a unifying roadmap for all countries, all companies, and all people to address the climate crisis by taking actions to ensure we do not exceed 1.5C in global warming,” said Christiana Figueres, the UN’s former climate change chief, now founding partner of Global Optimism. “By joining The Climate Pledge, these companies are demonstrating both their ambitions for the future and for recovery now. Their actions and investments are creating sorely needed jobs, spurring innovation, regenerating the natural environment, and helping their consumers to buy more sustainable products. The growing collective of companies joining The Climate Pledge, acting in accordance with science, is cause for optimism.”

Last year, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. Amazon was the first signatory and thirteen organizations have now signed The Climate Pledge including: Amazon, Best Buy, Henkel, Infosys, McKinstry, Mercedes-Benz, Oak View Group, Real Betis, Reckitt Benckiser, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Signify, and Verizon—sending an important signal that there will be rapid growth in demand for products and services that help reduce carbon emissions.

Nouveau Monde Drives Traceability for Critical Battery Materials, in Conjunction With Global Battery Alliance

  • Nouveau Monde has been selected as the pilot project to implement traceability of minerals for the mining and battery materials industries in Québec, Canada
  • This project is affiliated with the Global Battery Alliance and its “Battery Passport”, which members include Audi, BMW, Google, Groupe Renault, Honda Motors, LG Chem, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Corp., Saft, SK Innovation, Umicore, Volkswagen, and Volvo
  • The desire for traceability is a firm trend amongst consumers and will provide Nouveau Monde’s customers with a guarantee of transparency, sustainability, ethical and environmentally friendly sourcing
  • Nouveau Monde believes this first mover advantage is a unique differentiator vis-à-vis its peers
  • Nouveau Monde is developing the only fully integrated source of green battery anode material in the Western World, ensuring best-of-class ESG standards across its entire value chain

MONTREAL, Nov. 18, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Québec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonatan Julien kicked off yesterday the pilot project on battery materials traceability for which Nouveau Monde Graphite (“Nouveau Monde” or “the Company”) (TSXV: NOU; OTCQX: NMGRF; Frankfurt: NM9) has been selected as the sole and strategic battery material partner. Having an integrated business model, from mining operations to manufacturing of carbon-neutral anode battery materials, the Company is ideally positioned to drive the implementation of the Global Battery Alliance’s (“GBA”) Battery Passeport principles guaranteeing the traceability and sustainability of strategic minerals.

Through this pioneering project led by Propulsion Québec and building on the unique expertise of OPTEL Group and the International Reference Center for Life Cycle of Products, Services and Systems (CIRAIG), traceability will be established by mapping and documenting Nouveau Monde’s graphite supply chain from mining to refining with detailed data on chemistry, environmental, social & governance (“ESG”) factors, greenhouse gas (“GHG”) footprint, logistics, etc. Artificial intelligence and mass data management will make it possible to follow materials through the various stages of processing and custody to guarantee its origin, ESG compliance and distinct properties. Work on battery identity and selection of reporting criteria will be coordinated with GBA to inform global standards on sustainable and transparent battery production.

Founded by the World Economic Forum, GBA is actively working to develop a circular and responsible battery value chain as one of the main drivers for achieving the 2°C objective of the Paris Accord in the transportation and energy sectors. Membership includes key manufacturers, regulators, and NGOs such as Audi, BMW Group, Google, Groupe Renault, Honda Motors, the International Energy Agency, LG Chem, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Corp., Propulsion Québec, Saft, SK Innovation, the United Nations Environment Programme, Umicore, Volkswagen, Volvo Group.

“The mineral traceability project in the battery sector is an initiative that fits perfectly with our vision for the development of strategic and critical minerals (“SCM”) in Québec. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the origin of the products they purchase. A reliable traceability program becomes a pledge of our responsibility in the valorization of SCMs and a strategic advantage to be even more competitive. These are essential ingredients to ensure a sustainable energy and technology transition” said Jonatan Julien, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region.

Eric Desaulniers, President and Chief Executive Officer at Nouveau Monde, commented: “The production of graphite-based materials with a carbon-neutral footprint is already central to Nouveau Monde’s business strategy to drive sustainability across the EV and energy storage value chain. Now, with our roadmap to traceability and battery identity, we are positioning ourselves as the western leaders thanks to turnkey solutions for manufacturers.”

Nouveau Monde’s Chairman Arne H. Frandsen continued: “Traceability and block-chain accountability are key for the end-consumers as well as the battery producers. We are proud that Nouveau Monde continues to spearhead the effort to be the responsible and sustainable supplier-of-choice to the global battery and renewable energy industries”.

Traceability for increased sustainability
and access to strategic markets

The Battery Passport is set to become the dominant norm attesting to the environmental and social compliance of a battery throughout its value chain. By contributing to the definition of global parameters for materials traceability, Nouveau Monde gets a headstart in tailoring its transformation chain, technologies and reporting mechanisms to meet the expectations of today’s marketplace.

Graphite underpins all lithium-ion batteries that supply both electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. “By 2030, batteries could enable 30% of the required reductions in carbon emissions in the transport and power sectors, provide 600 million people with access to electricity, as well as create 10 million safe and sustainable jobs around the world. To realise this potential, the battery value chain will have to expand by 19 times over the next decade” (source: GBA, 2020).

In recent years companies such as Tesla and Volkswagen have adopted responsible sourcing policies and auditing systems, a clear sign that pressure for sustainable production is increasing from shareholders, consumers, governments as well as environmental and social advocacy groups. Correspondingly, the European Commission is set to table new regulations to ensure that batteries manufactured or imported into Europe meet the highest ESG standards.

Nouveau Monde’s traceability program will therefore strengthen its competitive advantage and facilitate commercialization in strategic markets, in some cases with a premium for its advanced materials, and also contribute to strategically positioning Québec and Canada as a prime destination for building a green battery value chain.

This GBA-affiliated project brings together resources and expertise from the Government of Québec, the Government of Canada, Investissement Québec, CIRAIG, OPTEL Group, and Propulsion Québec.

Alfa Laval launches marine system for reduction of greenhouse gases

PR Newswire

LUND, Sweden, Nov. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ —  Alfa Laval – a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling – has launched a new marine environmental system, Alfa Laval PureCool. The system, in combination with WinGD’s iCER technology, can reduce methane slip from ships’ gas engines which, if released in the atmosphere, has a higher global warming potential than CO2. The new PureCool system is the latest addition to Alfa Laval’s extensive marine environmental product portfolio.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has the target of cutting vessel-related greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent by 2050. As the marine industry works towards a future based on non-fossil fuels, Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) is expected to be one of the transition fuels towards decarbonization.

The new Alfa Laval PureCool system, in combination with WinGD’s iCER technology (as mentioned in a press release on June 25, 2020) targets an unaddressed emission source: methane slip, which is the small percentage of unburned methane that escapes through the engine when LNG is used as fuel. Although combusted LNG releases less CO2 than other fossil fuels, the methane has a higher global warming potential than CO2, which makes the unburned fraction a concern. No regulations currently exist for methane slip, but the issue should be addressed if the marine industry is to reach a 50 percent reduction in marine greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“As LNG is an important bridge fuel in the transition to a zero-carbon future we need to mitigate the  negative environmental consequences  of this fuel as far  as possible,” says Sameer Kalra, President of the Marine Division. “Our new Alfa Laval PureCool system not only helps in the reduction of methane slip but also enables fuel savings which makes it a good solution for both our customers and the environment.”

Alfa Laval PureCool is the latest addition to the company’s PureThinking concept introduced more than 15 years ago which. It includes, among several products, key systems like Alfa Laval PureBallast and PureSOx, which enable shipowners to comply with marine regulations.

Did you know that… according to DNV GL, the shipping industry’s fuel mix in 2050 is expected to have switched from being almost entirely oil dominated, to a mix of low- and/or zero-carbon fuels (60 percent) and natural gas (30 percent)?

This is Alfa Laval

Alfa Laval is active in the areas of Energy, Marine, and Food & Water, offering its expertise, products, and service to a wide range of industries in some 100 countries. The company is committed to optimizing processes, creating responsible growth, and driving progress – always going the extra mile to support customers in achieving their business goals and sustainability targets.

Alfa Laval’s innovative technologies are dedicated to purifying, refining, and reusing materials, promoting more responsible use of natural resources. They contribute to improved energy efficiency and heat recovery, better water treatment, and reduced emissions. Thereby, Alfa Laval is not only accelerating success for its customers, but also for people and the planet. Making the world better, every day. It’s all about Advancing better™.

Alfa Laval has 17,500 employees. Annual sales in 2019 were SEK 46.5 billion (approx. EUR 4.4 billion). The company is listed on Nasdaq OMX.

New book details the fascinating journey of one of Australia’s most significant and forthright conservation trailblazers

‘A Vanishing Kind: A Memoir of Dr John Wamsley in Conversations’ released

ADELAIDE, Australia, Nov. 18, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — John Wamsley and Stephen L Davey announce the release their first joint publication titled “A Vanishing Kind” (published by Balboa Press AU). This memoir, told in conversations, narrates the story of a brilliant mathematics professor who became notorious for wearing a cat-skin hat and who went on to become the father of wildlife conservation in Australia.

Wildlife conservation in Australia owes much to the ideas of Wamsley, a controversial mathematics professor whose attention-grabbing actions made him at once famous and widely vilified. He overcame childhood disadvantage and trauma to create first a private sanctuary called Warrawong, then Earth Sanctuaries Limited, the world’s first publicly listed company devoted solely to wildlife conservation. His company fell from a great height, but its influence has been enormous. This book tells the story of that enterprise and the man who founded it.

“The world’s environment and democratic systems are under more pressure than ever before,” the author states, on the relevance of the book in today’s society. “While the entire world grapples with climate change, it is important to realise that climate is only part of the battle. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in biodiversity or the failures of democratic systems.”

David Higgs MBE, MSc, Director of The Environmental Press Agency says in his review of the book:

“Such a book has been needed for a very long time. It should be on the essential reading list of any student of the environment or conservation. Wamsley’s controversial, radical, pragmatic approach revolutionised conservation in Australia.”

The book is available for purchase at https://www.balboapress.com/en-au/bookstore/bookdetails/819115-a-vanishing-kind.

While receiving high praise from friends and family for my informative yet lively updates, I also began to understand the impact I was having when interacting with other cancer patients — lifting their spirits and providing hope. Shin-Etsu Chemical Has Developed a Molding Silicone Rubber That Realizes Lighter Weight for Rubber-Molded Products

Shin-Etsu Chemical Has Developed a Molding Silicone Rubber That Realizes Lighter Weight for Rubber-Molded Products

TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Tokyo, President, Yasuhiko Saito) has now developed a new low-density type of molding silicone rubber that realizes lighter-weight rubber molded products. Shin-Etsu is the first company in the industry to have developed this type of molding silicone rubber using LIMS (Liquid Injection Molding System) materials.

Demand for lighter-weight rubber molded products is growing in many industrial fields such as automobiles and transportation vehicles like airplanes, as well as in other diverse fields such as wearable devices, and with the development of lighter weight products, further expansion of silicone rubber applications are expected.

So far, in order to make lighter-weight silicone rubber, a foaming agent was added to millable-type silicone rubber and molded into a sponge-like form. However, our new product does not require the adding of a foaming agent. Furthermore, because it can be molded using our advanced LIMS, it can meet the demand from molding-makers for superior quality and improvements in productivity.

This new product is available in two types: a low-density/high strength type *1 and a very low-density type *2. Both can make continuous automatic molding possible through the use of an injection molding machine, and therefore can efficiently produce high-quality rubber molded products, resulting in realizing not only improvements in productivity but also energy saving as well.

Shin-Etsu Chemical has a silicone rubber molding technical center. This Shin-Etsu Molding Technical Laboratory, which is located in Higashimatsuyama City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, is carrying out demonstrations of molding using our new products, and at the same time, we are working on molding technology improvements as well as enhancing technical services to our customers.

Silicone rubber combines many superior characteristics such as excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, weatherability and stable electrical insulation properties, all of which are not found in ordinary organic rubber. For this reason, it is used in a wide range of applications such as in automobiles, electric-electronics equipment, OA equipment, home appliances and products for daily use.

Taking advantage of Shin-Etsu Chemical’s superior product quality and technological strengths as well as our system for detailed response to our customers’ requests, going forward Shin-Etsu will continue to strive to meet the needs of the diversifying market.

*1 Low-density/high strength type: Compared to conventional silicone rubber molding products, this new type of product realizes about a 20-30% reduction in weight.

*2 Very low-density type: Compared to conventional silicone rubber molding products, this new type of product realizes about a 50-60% reduction in weight.
